Jun 6, 2006 VIVA la voga, Vita venexiàn
What a stupendous day it was last Sunday for the Vogalonga, the “other” regata Veneziana, a maratona a remo. No costumes (well, non from the 17th century anyway), but something like 5,000 entrants in a marea (over 1400) oar-powered boats of every size and shape, with more than half heralding not only from outside Venice, but from all over the world.
You’ll see I went a little crazy with the camera; next year, you’ll have to take the photos, ’cause I’ll be the one rowing 34 kilometers (21 miles) out to Burano and back, vi giuro…mark my words.

I think it will take that long to really become brava abbastanza…but I have a superb instructor (she’s the one ‘di poppa’ — at the stern navigating the caorlina full of women in the 13th row of photos), so there may be hope.

Sono un vogatore americano – ho sempre sognato di partecipare a La Voga Longa. Ho tanti amici in Italia, alcuni vogatori anche loro.
Sto cercando di organizzare alcuni equipaggi qui in America (Connecticut) per l’edizione 2008. Forse potete aiutarmi con alcune domande:
La gara e aperta ad equipaggi misti??
E aperta anche ad equipaggi di solo donne??
Ho sentito che servono barche tipo otto “jole”. Potete suggerirmi alcuni club che potrei contattare per assicurarmi la barche nece3ssari?

I’m a sailor – not an oarsperson – but am eager to witness the vogalonga on May 11, when I’ll be visiting Venice. Any ideas about vantage points for the start and finish, or about possibility of following the fleet in a sailing vessel?
